A group of airline passengers have filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. The lawsuit claims that the merger is an attempt to form a monopoly, and would lead to higher prices and less services for the customer. United offered to purchase Continental in May in a $3 billion at-stock deal, but the merger must still be approved by the Department of Justice.

A $5 million lawsuit has been filed against General Mills, alleging their claim that its Fruit Roll-Ups and other snacks are low-fat are false and misleading. The Plaintiff says in her lawsuit that General Mills fails to tell the public that “it uses partially hydrogenated oil in the snacks, which the lawsuit says is ‘dangerous’ and ‘unhealthy.’” On boxes of Fruit Roll-Ups, General Mills claims the treats are “naturally flavored, low fat, and ‘a good source of Vitamin C.’”

The city of Denver has agreed to a $175,000 settlement in a lawsuit filed by a woman who was arrested by police who were improperly enforcing a restraining order. The woman was arrested for violating a restraining order that was in fact supposed to protect her from her ex-boyfriend, the lawsuit stated. She also spent a night in jail before being released, which prevented her from being with her 4-month old baby.

A lawsuit has been filed against the University of Cincinnati police and the University Hospital in the Taser death of a psychiatric patient. The patient was tased by police officers while under restraints at the hospital, the lawsuit claims, sending him into cardiac arrest and killing him three days later. The patient suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder, delusions and other mental disorders. The lawsuit accuses police of using extreme force and hospital officials of negligence.

A lawsuit has been filed in the death of a New York man who was killed in a boating accident in 2008. The lawsuit, filed by the family, named more than 70 people as plaintiffs. The family member died when the boat he was riding in was struck by a fishing boat that was involved in an overnight fishing tournament. The lawsuit contends that the driver of the fishing boat did not have the proper license or safety certificate to operate the boat. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages

Kellogg Company has recalled millions of packages of Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks products due to what the company has called an “uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell.” The chance of illness is low but sensitive consumers may experience nausea and diarrhea.

Toyota Motors Co. has issued a recall of 17,000 2010 Lexus HS 250h hybrids and halted sales of the model due to a defect that could cause fuel to leak in a rear-end collision. Federal safety officials have said that the fuel leak could cause a fire. Toyota has said that no fires or injuries related to the defect have been reported to them by consumers.

Joe Jackson, Michael Jackson’s father, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against his son’s personal physician, alleging that the doctor was negligent in his care for Jackson. Los Angeles prosecutors have charged Conrad Murray with giving Jackson high doses of propofol that may have caused the singer’s death. The lawsuit also claims that Murray tried to hide the fact that he gave Jackson the drugs

Drug maker Merck & Co. has been ordered by a jury to pay $8 million to a Florida woman whom claimed that the company’s drug Fosamax caused her severe jaw damage. The woman said in her lawsuit that the osteoporosis drug, which she had taken from 1997-2006, caused the tissue in her jaw bone to deteriorate. Reuters is reporting that there are some 900 lawsuits pending against Fosamax by patients who claim the same effects.

A jury in Maryland awarded slightly more than $2 million to the family of an inmate who was hit by a truck and killed while he was picking up trash on a work detail. The lawsuit alleged that jail officials failed to keep the inmates safe.
