Central DuPage Hospital in Illinois has agreed to a $5.3 million settlement with the husband of a woman who died of a stroke in 2006. The suit claimed to doctors “failed to properly evaluate and treat” the woman in December 2006, which lead to her death. Lawyers for the doctors said the doctors did nothing wrong, but that they settled to “avoid even the small risk of a runaway jury verdict.”

Toyota Motors will recall 1.1 million vehicles in their Corolla and Matrix lines in order to fix potential defective modules in the engine. The recall affects model years 2005 to 2008. Toyota said cracks may occur in the certain engine control module circuit boards, causing the engine to stall while driving. There have been unconfirmed accidents related to the defects and one minor injury, Toyota said.

Two Chicago mothers have filed a lawsuit against the owners of their apartment complex after a bottle of acid was dumped onto their two children by another child in the complex. The women claim in their lawsuit that the apartment owners were negligent in leaving the drain cleaner – which was 93 percent sulfuric acid – out for the children to get into. The 13-year-old boy who dumped the acid on the other kids has been charged with heinous battery and held on a delinquency petition.

A lawsuit has been filed against South Korean game developer NCSoft Corp. by a Hawaii man who claims he became “addicted” to one of the company’s video games. The man claims in his lawsuit that he spent 20,000 hours over five years playing the game “Lineage II” and “continues to this day to have a ‘compulsive urge and need’ to play the game.” He also claims he can no longer “function independently in usual daily activities” due to his addiction. The man is seeking unspecified damages.

A Virginia jury has awarded $1.95 million in a lawsuit over the death of a woman less than two days after she received plastic surgery. The woman was sent home an hour after her July 2008 surgery even though she was having respiratory problems, dizziness and fever, the lawsuit claims. She died the next day of aspiration pneumonia. The suit accused the physician and his staff of completely ignoring the woman and her symptoms, which resulted in her death.

Garmin Ltd has issued a recall of 1.25 million personal navigation devices over the potential for the battery to overheat and cause a fire hazard. Garmin says there have been 10 reports of batteries overheating in the devices, but none have caused injuries. Of the 1.25 million recalled units, about 796,000 were sold in the U.S.

Jackson County, Mo., has agreed to a $270,000 settlement in a lawsuit filed by a motorcyclist who crashed his bike in a pot hole last summer. The motorcyclist was riding his motorcycle in east Jackson County when he hit a pot hole ankle-deep and as wide as his arms, his lawsuit claims, suffering serious injuries. The suit alleges the county was previous aware of the dangerous pot hole but had done nothing to fix it.

A California bread company has issued a recall of 5,000 to 10,000 loaves of bread because of an undeclared allergen in the bread. Milton’s Baking Company said their 24 oz. packages of multi-grain bread contains milk and can cause “serious and life-threatening health risk to milk-allergic individuals.” No serious injuries have yet been reported involving the recalled bread.

A Brownsville, Texas, woman has reached a $3.2 million settlement in a lawsuit she filed over the death of her husband in an explosion in 2006. The woman’s husband was filling up a tanker truck at a RTW Properties L.P. terminal when the truck exploded, killing him. The wife claimed RTW Properties was negligent in providing proper safety measures at the terminal which could have prevented her husband’s death.

Officials for the F.D.A. are asking Congress for more power to enforce rules and hold companies accountable, especially regarding imported food. The statements, made by F.D.A. Margaret Hamburg in a recent interview, came on the heels of a salmonella outbreak that affected some 1,300 and resulted in a recall of 500 million eggs. Hamburg said currently the F.D.A. is limited to only reactive measures regarding food regulation and needs more power to take “preventative approaches.” No deaths have been reported related to the current salmonella outbreak
