Hotel heir Barron Hilton will pay $4.9 million to a former gas station attendant in California who was hit by Hilton’s car during a drunk driving accident in 2008. When Hilton was arrested, he had a blood-alcohol-content level of 0.14 and was 18 years old. The attorney for the man injured said he suffered permanent disabilities because of the incident.

An Ohio jury has awarded $1.9 million to a Mason County police officer who was hit by a local woman while directing traffic. The accident left the plaintiff with permanent injuries to his leg, requiring him to walk with a cane at times and prohibiting him from ever being a police officer again. Doctors testified in the case that, because of his injuries, the plaintiff will only be able to work in “one percent of available job categories in this economy.”

A refrigeration and HVAC company has agreed to a $1.5 million settlement over the death of scientist at the University of Washington in a car accident two years ago. One of the HVAC company vans made an illegal U-turn on a Seattle street, striking the victim, who was riding his bicycle, and ran over him.

A New York man has filed a lawsuit against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority after his arm got caught in the door of a subway train in Brooklyn last August. The man claims he was forced to rip his arm out from the door – breaking it – before he was smashed into the platform wall. The plaintiff suffered multiple fractures in his left arm as well as bumps and bruises. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

A Pennsylvania jury has awarded $1.6 million to a local man who lost his leg in an accident while working in a grain bin in Kansas. The plaintiff slipped and fell while working in the bin, getting his leg caught by the drag chain in the conveyor system. The lawsuit contented that the makers of the conveyor system failed to provide adequate protection for workers in the grain bins and did not warn them of the risks of injury.

The family of a Salt Lake City man who was killed in a car accident in March 2010 has settled a lawsuit with the driver who caused the accident. According to the suit, Efrain Torres ran a stop sign and struck the vehicle driven by the victim, who died of injuries sustained at the accident. Per the settlement, the family of the victim will accept “the policy limits offered by Efrain’s insurance companies,” the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

A soldier returned to North Texas from Iraq only to end up in a fight for his life after he was involved in a motorcycle crash on a tollway in the Dallas, Texas area.
The driver of an automobile slammed into the soldier from behind while the soldier was on his way home from work. A vido from a tollway traffic camera shows the drive or a SUV swerving to avoid running over the motorcyclist and he was issued three traffic citations: not having a driver’s license, having no insurance, and failure to maintain speed.

The city of Oakland has agreed to a $412,500 settlement in a lawsuit filed against the city by a man whose arm was broken during a police crackdown at an Oakland Raiders game. According to the suit, a fight broke out in the stands during a Raiders-49ers game in 2008 a few rows from the plaintiff. One of the police officers who responded tackled the plaintiff, bending his arm back and snapping his elbow, even though he was not involved in the fight.

A Japanese family has filed a lawsuit against two Utah tour companies over the death of their son in 2010 while on a local tour. The suit claims the driver “tried to mask fatigue with energy drinks and caffeine gum before falling asleep” and causing the van to roll and crash. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

A California couple has been awarded $5.7 million after they were rear-ended by a Southern California Edison truck in a snow storm two years ago. The accident occurred while the plaintiffs were installing snow chains on their tires safely on the side of the road. The suit claimed the driver of the truck was not properly trained to drive in snow, lost control and rear-ended the couple. The damages will cover medical bills and past and future emotional pain.
