School Bus Crash Suit Settled in Virginia

The Suffolk Country School Board has agreed to an undisclosed settlement in a lawsuit stemming from a school bus crash in January 2009. The suit was filed by the mother of one of the students on the bus who suffered neck and back injuries in the crash. The suit accused the bus driver of “failure to maintain a proper lookout, failure to keep his vehicle under proper control and failure to keep a safe distance.”

Colorado Bus Crash Prompts Suit Against Texas Bus Company

A group of Denton, Texas, church members have filed a lawsuit against a Fort Worth-based bus company over a crash that occurred in Colorado last December. According to the suit, witnesses said the bus was being driven at excessive speeds on icy roads, and the plaintiffs accuse the driver and bus company of negligence. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Suit: Man’s Genitalia Cut Off by Foam Cutter

A man who had part of his genitalia cut off by a peeler machine last year has filed a lawsuit against his employer, Future Foam Carpet Cushion. According to the suit, the man was removing a foam core from a machine used to cut carpeting foam when the machine turned on and the blade sliced into him. The suit claims Future Foam was negligent in protecting the man and is seeking punitive damages of more than $15,000.

Fatal crash in Colorado Springs

An automobile crash has left one person dead Tuesday afternoon in northeast Colorado Springs.

The crash happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. today, 2.8.2011 and involved at least two vehicles.

Ambulance attendants on scene reported that one person died in the crash.

Initial data indicated that at least one person was thrown from a vehicle as it rolled near the intersection.

Police noted that northbound Union Boulevard has been closed at Academy Boulevard.

Settlement Reached in Metro Bus Accident

King County in Washington has agreed to a $4.5 million settlement with a local woman who was hit by a Metro bus while using a crosswalk in 2008. The woman suffered a brain injury as well as a shattered arm when she was struck by the bus’ mirror, her suit claimed, and she was forced to quit her job. County officials admitted to negligence and accepted responsibility for the accident, the Seattle Times reported.

Jury Awards $1.2 Million over Coffee Machine Burns

A Georgia jury has awarded a local woman $1.2 million in a lawsuit filed against QuikTrip convenience stores after she burned her hand on one of the convenience store’s cappuccino machines in 2007. The woman claimed she was using the machine when 190-degree water shot out of it, scalding her hand. The company said the incident was a freak accident and has since replaced the cappuccino machines in all its stores.

Man Paralyzed in Pool Accident Awarded $6.2 Million

A Central Texas jury awarded $6.2 million to a man who was paralyzed after diving into an under-filled pool at an apartment complex after a 2005 party. The jury determined the owner of Longhorn Landing Apartments was 51 percent liable for the accident for failing to warn swimmers about the water level or closing the pool. While the jury also deemed the plaintiff responsible for his own actions, it was also determined that “swimmers should be able to expect that an open pool is safe to use.”

6,500 Bicycle Handlebar Stems Recalled

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 6,500 bicycle handlebar stems that can crack or break. The product’s manufacturer, Salsa Cycles, said the stems were sold at bicycle retailers and websites from April 2010 through October 2010. There has been one report of the handlebar stem breaking, resulting in minor injuries.

$66 Million Awarded to Woman Crippled by Machine

A New York jury has awarded a Buffalo woman $66 million for injuries she suffered on a Cybex weight machine. The plaintiff, a former physical therapist, had her vertebra crushed when the 500-pound machine fell on her in 2004, rendering her a quadriplegic. “The verdict in New York state Supreme Court was one of the largest personal injury awards ever in Erie County,” the Boston Herald reports.

Seattle Company Recalls Bicycles

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of about 200 Redline bicycles due to a defect that can cause the rider to fall. According to the products manufacturer, Seattle Bike Supply, the head tube can separate from the frame, causing the rider to lose control and fall. The company said they have received four reports of people suffering minor injuries related to the defect.
