Groping Suit at Airport Settled for $2,350

The U.S. government has agreed to a $2,350 settlement in a lawsuit filed by a Texas woman whose breasts were exposed during a pat-down at an airport in Corpus Christi, Texas. The lawsuit alleged one of the Transportation Security Administration employees exposed her breasts during a rigorous pat down, and that TSA employees laughed about the incident afterward. The plaintiff claimed intentional infliction of emotional distress on the part of TSA.

Suit Settled over Death of Seattle Cyclist

A refrigeration and HVAC company has agreed to a $1.5 million settlement over the death of scientist at the University of Washington in a car accident two years ago. One of the HVAC company vans made an illegal U-turn on a Seattle street, striking the victim, who was riding his bicycle, and ran over him.

Suit Settled over Car Crash with Police Cruiser

A Seattle man has received $650,000 to settle a lawsuit he filed against the Seattle Police Department for a crash he was involved in with a police car in February 2009. The officer was traveling over a bridge in Seattle when he lost control of his vehicle on a patch of ice and struck the plaintiff’s truck, the suit said. The man suffered injuries to his chest, neck, back and abdomen.

Deputy DUI Crash Leads to $4.75 Million Settlement

Los Angeles County has approved a $4.75 million settlement in a lawsuit filed over a car accident caused by an intoxicated sheriff’s deputy. The lawsuit claims the officer was intoxicated and speeding when he crashed into the driver’s side of the other vehicle, causing severe injuries to the passengers in the car. The payout may have been higher, the Los Angeles Times reported, had the driver of the other vehicle not been under the influence of narcotics at the time. The deputy was sentenced to six months in prison for drunk driving.

Vegas Police to Pay $1 Million in Man’s Death

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has agreed to a $1 million settlement in a lawsuit filed over the death of a mentally ill man two years ago at the hands of police officers. The officers had entered the man’s home to bring him in for a mental evaluation – he suffered schizophrenia and bipolar disorder – when the man attempted to escape. One of the officers used a neck hold to restrain the man, and the medical examiner ruled the man’s death was from “cardiopulmonary arrest as a result of the neck restraint.”

Salt Lake Family Receives Settlement in Car Crash

The family of a Salt Lake City man who was killed in a car accident in March 2010 has settled a lawsuit with the driver who caused the accident. According to the suit, Efrain Torres ran a stop sign and struck the vehicle driven by the victim, who died of injuries sustained at the accident. Per the settlement, the family of the victim will accept “the policy limits offered by Efrain’s insurance companies,” the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Georgia Man Settles with Cobb County Police

The police department in Cobb County, Ga., has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by a local Latino man who claimed he was targeted in a traffic stop and arrested because he looked like an illegal immigrant. The plaintiff was riding his bike when stopped by two police officers, who questioned him about his identity, the suit claims. The man was allegedly beaten and punched in the face, resulting in a broken nose. He will receive $32,500 as part of the settlement.

$7 Million Malpractice Settlement Approved

A $7 million settlement in a malpractice suit between four medical professionals at a Worcester, Mass., hospital and the mother of a disabled child has been approved. The suit alleged doctors and officials at the hospital failed to tell the mother of tests that could have been done to test her child for genetic disorders before she was born. The tests could have prompted the plaintiff to have an abortion “rather than carry her now-disabled child to term,” her lawyer told the Boston Globe.

Seattle Settles Fatal Police Shooting Lawsuit

The city of Seattle has agreed to a $1.5 million settlement in a lawsuit with the family of a local Native American man who was killed by a police officer. The lawsuit claimed the man, a woodcarver by trade, was walking across a street in front of a police car carrying a small knife when the officer got out of his vehicle and shot the man. After an investigation, the department determined the shooting was unjustified, and criminal charges may be filed.

GlaxoSmithKline Settles Denture Cream Lawsuits

GlaxoSmithKline Plc has paid $120 million to resolve more than 100 lawsuits in the past nine months over their denture cream, Poligrip. The lawsuits complained that the cream caused neurological disorders in users because of the high levels if zinc. The suits also claimed the company failed to warn its consumers about the risk to zinc exposure.
