Utah, Salt Lake City Blamed for Boy’s Drowning

The family of an eight-year-old boy who drowned in 2009 has filed a lawsuit against the state of Utah and Salt Lake City, claiming the parties were negligent in failing to prevent the boy’s death. The boy was walking across a Jordan River canal pipe when he fell into the water and drowned. The suit claims city and state had done nothing to keep people off the pipes and out of the area, even though they knew it to be potentially dangerous. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

FDA Finds Filthy Conditions at Kellogg Plant

Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found “potentially harmful bacteria and unsanitary conditions” at a Kellogg plant in Georgia, the Wall Street Journal reported. The conditions included pooling water and flies near surfaces that came into contact with food. The agency was not sure if the conditions would support the growth of the listeria bacteria, but officials did condemn the plant for its lack of cleaning and sanitation operations.

Denver City Council Approves Lawsuit Settlement

The Denver City Council has approved a $117,500 settlement in a lawsuit filed by a man who was allegedly beaten by police officers in 2008. The plaintiff alleged in his suit that he was beaten by either a flashlight or club by two local police officers. The settlement was approved 8-3 by the council.

Diabetic Files Suit over Coffee with Real Sugar

A Pennsylvania woman has filed a lawsuit against a local Dunkin’ Donuts shop, claiming they put real sugar in her coffee instead of artificial sweetener, sending her into diabetic shock. The plaintiff claims she unknowingly drank the coffee, immediately became ill and was forced to go to the hospital. Her lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Groping Suit at Airport Settled for $2,350

The U.S. government has agreed to a $2,350 settlement in a lawsuit filed by a Texas woman whose breasts were exposed during a pat-down at an airport in Corpus Christi, Texas. The lawsuit alleged one of the Transportation Security Administration employees exposed her breasts during a rigorous pat down, and that TSA employees laughed about the incident afterward. The plaintiff claimed intentional infliction of emotional distress on the part of TSA.

Suit Settled over Death of Seattle Cyclist

A refrigeration and HVAC company has agreed to a $1.5 million settlement over the death of scientist at the University of Washington in a car accident two years ago. One of the HVAC company vans made an illegal U-turn on a Seattle street, striking the victim, who was riding his bicycle, and ran over him.

Suit Settled over Car Crash with Police Cruiser

A Seattle man has received $650,000 to settle a lawsuit he filed against the Seattle Police Department for a crash he was involved in with a police car in February 2009. The officer was traveling over a bridge in Seattle when he lost control of his vehicle on a patch of ice and struck the plaintiff’s truck, the suit said. The man suffered injuries to his chest, neck, back and abdomen.

Suit: Woman Raped by Chicago PD, City did Nothing


A Chicago woman has filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department, claiming she was raped by two officers and the department did nothing to investigate the crime. The lawsuit alleges “Chicago police officers accused of sexual misconduct against citizens can be confident that the city will not investigate those accusations in earnest.” The officers accused of rape in this lawsuit have been previously accused of similar crimes, the suit states.

Child’s Death at Staples Center Prompts Lawsuit

A Los Angeles family has filed a lawsuit against Anschutz Entertainment Group and L.A. Arena Co. after their 2-year-old son fell to his death from a Staples Center luxury box at the end of a Lakers game last year. The suit claims the defendants failed to warn users about the “dangerous design” of the skyboxes and that the barriers are not tall enough. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified monetary damages and an injunction “requiring the installation of taller barriers in front of the boxes.”

Deputy DUI Crash Leads to $4.75 Million Settlement

Los Angeles County has approved a $4.75 million settlement in a lawsuit filed over a car accident caused by an intoxicated sheriff’s deputy. The lawsuit claims the officer was intoxicated and speeding when he crashed into the driver’s side of the other vehicle, causing severe injuries to the passengers in the car. The payout may have been higher, the Los Angeles Times reported, had the driver of the other vehicle not been under the influence of narcotics at the time. The deputy was sentenced to six months in prison for drunk driving.
