Man Recieves $2.85 Mil. After Being Tased


A stun-gun manufacturer has agreed to a $2.85 million settlement with a California man who suffered brain damage after being tased four years ago. The man was shocked by a Watsonvile, Calif., police officer in 2006 after refusing to exit a bus. The suit says the man went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing for 18 minutes after being tased. He suffered severe brain damage, and now requires around-the-clock care, the suit claims. The settlement money will go toward the man’s past and future medical costs.

Woman Fell At Airport, Suffered Brain Damage, Lawsuit Claims

A lawsuit has been filed against the Salt Lake City International Airport by a woman who slipped and fell and suffered brain damage. The woman, a former flight attendant, said she was walking to her car when she slipped on a slick sidewalk, falling and hitting her head. The lawsuit says the brain damage she suffered has affected “her work and personal life.”

Lawsuit Filed Over Fatal California Bus Accident

A lawsuit has been filed against Greyhound in Sacramento, Calif., by six passengers injured in a fatal bus accident last week. The lawsuit claims that the driver “did not not fulfill his duty to transport the passengers safely.” Another passenger, who is not part of the lawsuit, has made statements that he believes the bus driver was speeding just before the accident occurred, which killed six people. The accident is still under investigation, and the speed of the bus has yet to be determined. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Lawsuit Filed Over 1986 Murder Investigation

A lawsuit has been filed against the Los Angeles Police Department that claims they failed to investigate a 1986 murder since the prime suspect was another police officer. The suit, filed by the family of the victim, claims that the officer had confronted and threatened the victim multiple times before she was killed. During the investigation the police officer was never questioned. Recently, however, the case was reopened and the police office was arrested based on DNA evidence. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Jury To Decide Verdict in Pizza Hut Driver Wreck

A San Diego jury will decide this week if Pizza Hut is liable for a November 2008 accident involving one of their drivers. The accident left a mother and daughter severely injured. According to the lawsuit, driver had a seizure while driving during work, causing her to black out and crash into the car containing the mother and child. The lawsuit claims that Pizza Hut should have known that their employee was at risk for seizures and has the responsibility of putting safe drivers on the road. The driver was eventually dropped from the lawsuit.

Jury: Driver, Caltrans, Responsible For Car Accident

A jury in California has ordered Caltrans and a northern California woman to pay $12.2 million to a 21-year-old girl who suffered permanent brain damage during a car accident in 2006. The woman hit the girl with her car while the girl was crossing the street at a cross walk at the top of a small rise in the road. The lawyers for the plaintiff argued also that Caltrans was responsible because they had done nothing to ensure the safety of pedestrians and drivers at that intersection, which has seen three similarly fatal accidents since 1991

Lawsuit Against Pfizer Inc. Reinstated in California

The California Supreme Court has reinstated a lawsuit filed by pharmacies against Pfizer Inc. that accuses the company of price fixing. The lawsuit claims that Pfizer and other drug companies conspired together to keep cheaper medications from Canada out of the U.S.  The suit was dismissed by  a lower court in 2008 after Pfizer argued that the pharmacies weren’t harmed because the higher prices were passed on to customers. That argument was rejected earlier this week and the case was sent back down to an Oakland, Calif., trial court.

Bad Reviews of Doctor on Internet Prompt Libel Lawsuit

A cosmetic surgeon in northern California has filed a libel and defamation lawsuit against a host of online critics who were allegedly “badmouthing” her on the Internet. Dr. Kimberly Henry claims in her lawsuit that at least 12 different online reviews have engaged in “libel and defamation, invasion of privacy and interference with prospective economic advantage” by posting “scathing reviews” on various Web sites. The lawsuit seeks $2 million in total damages.

Google Maps to Blame for Accident, Lawsuit Claims

A Los Angeles woman has filed a lawsuit against Google and a Salt Lake County man after she was hit by a car while walking down a street as directed by Google Maps. Lauren Rosenberg said in her lawsuit that she used Google Maps to find walking directions in Park City, Utah. Google Maps directed her to walk down a major road “where vehicles travel at a high rate of speed and [is] devoid of pedestrian sidewalks,” her suit states. She was hit by Patrick Harwood, who was allegedly driving in a “negligent manner,” and suffered severe injuries. Her lawsuit is seeking more than $100,000 in damages.

Judge: NYC Wrongful Death Lawsuit to Proceed

A judge has ruled that a lawsuit over the fatal shooting of a man by five city New York City police officers may proceed. Sean Bell was shot and killed in 2006 after he accidentally hit a police officer in the leg with his car while leaving a bachelor party. Officers fired more than 50 bullets at the car Bell was driving, saying they believed either he or one of the other two men in the car to be armed. There were no guns in the car. The two sides will meet to discuss a possible settlement in late July.
