A Utah woman has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs over the death of her husband from an overdose of medications prescribed by VA doctors. The man, who was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a brain injury he sustained in Iraq, was taking a myriad of drugs. The lawsuit claims his doctors should have monitored his prescriptions more closely and that they failed in their duty to “provide reasonable, necessary, appropriate and timely medical care and treatment.”

An Austin, Texas lawyer has filed a lawsuit over injuries he suffered at a local concert in March when a mechanical arm and video camera crashed into the crowd. The plaintiff was knocked unconscious in the incident, and claims he suffered head injuries that make it impossible for him to continue practicing law. The suit names the camera operator, the South by Southwest festival and the sponsor of the concert as defendants.

A U.S. Army reservist in Iowa has filed a lawsuit against the city of Altoona, Iowa, after he was acquitted of a 2005 hit-and-run murder in a local Lowes parking lot. The lawsuit accused police officers of “unilaterally excluding hundreds of other vehicles that more nearly matched the description of the vehicle that purportedly struck decedent” during their investigation. The plaintiff claims he was arrested without probable cause and that his arrest caused “humiliation, anxiety, loss of sleep, severe mental and emotional distress, legal bills and ‘exposure to public hatred, contempt and ridicule’.”

A Chicago family has filed a lawsuit against a cab driver and the company that owns his car after the cab driver hit and killed one of their family members last month. The Chicago Tribune reports the cab swerved across a few lanes of traffic and struck the 57-year-old man, who was walking down the sidewalk. The suit claims the cab driver and the taxi company were negligent and failed to exercise care and caution that “a reasonable person under similar circumstances would have exercised.” The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

A New York woman will receive $125,000 from the city of New York after she accused a New York City police officer of denying her insulin. According to the suit, the woman was arrested and jailed for 19 hours for smoking marijuana. While jailed, the officer refused to give the plaintiff her insulin, causing her blood sugar to reach dangerously high levels and nearly killing her.

A Utah family has filed a lawsuit against a West Valley City, Utah, police officer who shot and killed a 21-year-old man in December. The family members claim in the suit that the officer, who was responding to a domestic violence call, mistakenly thought the man was carrying a gun and shot him twice in the chest and once in the back. The suit also accuses the police department of withholding information from the family about the victim’s status shortly after the shooting. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

Ford Motor Co. has been hit with a patent infringement lawsuit over Sync, its in-car communication system. The suit, filed by Eagle Harbor Holdings, claims the automaker used patented voice command recognition technology in various aspects of the Sync system and other in-car features. Lawyers for the plaintiff have estimated that compensation from the suit could be in the millions.

Two Austin, Texas, residents have filed a lawsuit against the W Hotel and its operator after panels of glass fell 20 stories into the pool area, injuring the plaintiffs. The plaintiffs claim that weeks later they are “still removing glass from their bodies.” According to the lawsuit, the hotel was aware of potential problems with the glass before the incident, but had done nothing to ensure safety of its guests.

A Hawaiian woman has filed a lawsuit against drugmaker Merck & Co. over the drug Fosamax, claiming long-term use of the drug contributed to the breaking of her thigh bone. Fosamax, which is used to treat osteoporosis, makes bones more brittle after long-term use, the lawsuit claims. The plaintiff had been taking Fosamax since 2001.

A 38-year-old Amtrak attendant has filed a lawsuit against a trucking company after one of its truck crashed into an Amtrak train in Nevada, killing six people. The plaintiff claims in her lawsuit that the driver of the truck “negligently and carelessly failed to heed railroad warning signs” before crashing into the train. Safety investigators said skid marks at the scene show the driver slammed on his breaks about 100 yards before the railroad crossing, but they say it is unclear as to why he did not slow down earlier.
