Suit: Woman Raped by Chicago PD, City did Nothing


A Chicago woman has filed a lawsuit against the Chicago Police Department, claiming she was raped by two officers and the department did nothing to investigate the crime. The lawsuit alleges “Chicago police officers accused of sexual misconduct against citizens can be confident that the city will not investigate those accusations in earnest.” The officers accused of rape in this lawsuit have been previously accused of similar crimes, the suit states.

Child’s Death at Staples Center Prompts Lawsuit

A Los Angeles family has filed a lawsuit against Anschutz Entertainment Group and L.A. Arena Co. after their 2-year-old son fell to his death from a Staples Center luxury box at the end of a Lakers game last year. The suit claims the defendants failed to warn users about the “dangerous design” of the skyboxes and that the barriers are not tall enough. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified monetary damages and an injunction “requiring the installation of taller barriers in front of the boxes.”

Woman Falls to Death off Pub, Lawsuit Filed

A Florida man has filed a lawsuit against the Roxy Pub in Palm Beach over the death of his ex-wife, who fell from the top deck of the bar in December. The suit alleges the pub was negligent in failing to install a railing atop the pub, which would have prevented the woman’s death. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the couple’s two children, is seeking unspecified damages.

Mother of Robber Files Wrongful Death Suit

An Oklahoma woman has filed a lawsuit against an Oklahoma City pharmacist who shot and killed her son during a robbery in May 2009. The 16-year-old boy was trying to rob the store when the pharmacist shot him in the head and five times in the body. The pharmacist is currently on trial for first-degree murder; prosecutors claim he “went too far” in his actions, The Oklahoman reports. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.

Boy Killed After Drinking Four Loko, Suit Filed

A lawsuit has been filed against the makers of the alcoholic beverage Four Loko by the family of a 15-year-old boy who was hit by a car after drinking two cans of the product. The lawsuit claims the beverage “desensitizes users to the symptoms of intoxication, and increases the potential for alcohol-related harm.” The stimulants in the drink allegedly mask the feeling of being drunk, the suit says, making it more dangerous than other alcohols. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Purchasers Notified of Class-Action Suit against Maker of Weight-Loss Supplement

Notices were sent out this week to purchasers of the weight-loss supplement Akavar, notifying them of a class-action lawsuit against the maker of Akavar. The suit claims the marketing of the product, which says “eat all you want and still lose weight,” has not been tested in clinical trials or evaluated by doctors. The phrase is misleading, fraudulent and deceptive, the suit alleges.

City Tree Fell on Truck, Killing Child, Suit Says

A San Jose, Calif., couple has filed a lawsuit against the city after a rotting maple tree fell onto their truck, killing their 2-year-old son and injuring them. According to the lawsuit, the tree was stricken with root rot that was not visible from above ground and, since the tree was on public property and owned by the city, the city was responsible for maintaining it and making sure it was safe for residents. The suit is seeking damages to cover the funeral, the couple’s medical and legal bills, loss of earnings and damage to the truck.

Suit: Woman Murdered by Resident at Group Home

A lawsuit has been filed over the death of a young woman who was a counselor at a Revere, Mass., group home earlier this year. The lawsuit claims the woman was killed by one of the residents at the home who has a history of violence and medical illness. The suit names the directors of the agency as plaintiffs, as well as two doctors and the suspect in the murder.

Boy Falls to Death from Rollercoaster, Suit Filed

A lawsuit has been filed against the Go Bananas amusement part in Norridge, Ill., after a 3-year-old boy fell from one of the rides and died earlier this month. The boy was riding on the Python Pit roller coaster when he somehow came out of the restraints and fell below the cars, the police report states. The lawsuit says the park was negligent and that the ride did not stop quickly enough to save the boy’s life.

Happy Meals Hit with Suit; Company Blames Parents

Fast food giant McDonald’s is fighting back against a lawsuit seeking to stop the company from offering toys with children’s meals because it “lures children” into their restaurants and contributes to the rising childhood obesity rate. McDonald’s, however, claims parents are to blame, saying that they could always not buy the meals for their children. The lawsuit, filed in California, alleges the marketing strategy geared toward children violates California consumer protection laws.
