The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 33,000 clip-on desk lamps due to the risk of electric shock. Imported by LG Sourcing Inc., the agency said the lamp power cords can detach, exposing the wires. There have been five reports of wires becoming exposed, including one customer that was shocked.

A group of current and former employees in the Florida prison system have filed a lawsuit against the state over exposure to toxins at the Marianna Federal Correctional Institution. Many of the plaintiffs in the suit say they are suffering from “sores, joint pain, memory loss and internal bleeding” after being exposed to lead, cadmium and beryllium in the facility. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.

Social media giant Facebook Inc. will settle a class-action lawsuit over ads called “Sponsored Stories” that publicize members’ “likes” without compensating users or allowing them to opt out of the ad. The lawsuit claimed the ads violated the users’ “right to publicity” under California law. The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.

A Chinese company will pay $10.5 million to American customers who purchased vitamin C to settle a lawsuit that accused the company of price fixing. The lawsuit, filed in 2005, accused four Chinese companies of “conspiring to raise prices by limiting exports.” The three other defendants in the suit have yet to reach a settlement with the plaintiffs.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of about 100 carbon bicycle handlebar stems due to defects in the product that can cause it to break. Manufactured by Race Productions NV, the 4ZA Threadless stems can crack or break during use, posing a fall risk for the rider. There has been one report of the stem breaking, causing minor injuries.

A federal judge in Ohio has ordered the Wayne Local School District to pay $20,000 to one of its students to settle a free speech lawsuit against the school. School officials had prevented the boy from wearing a shirt that read “Jesus is not a Homophobe” while in school. The student filed suit against the school in early April.

A slew of Catholic groups, including the Roman Catholic dioceses of Springfield and Joliet, Ill., have filed lawsuits against the Obama Administration and the new requirement that employers cover cost of birth control for employees. The lawsuit claims the new requirements violate the Catholic Church’s right to freedom of religion “without government interference.” Representatives of the church say the suits aren’t seeking an endorsement from the court or a war on women’s rights.

Four carwash employees in the Los Angeles area have filed a lawsuit against their employers over missing overtime pay, among other things. In the lawsuit, the workers claim they were forced to arrive at work early, but were only paid once there were enough cars to wash. The suit is seeking class-action status.

A Philadelphia jury has awarded $78.5 million to a local woman whose child suffers from cerebral palsy due to “faulty diagnostic procedures” at the hospital in which he was born. In 2008, the woman went to Pottstown Memorial Medical Center with pregnancy complications. Hospital staff waited 81 minutes to deliver her baby, but the suit contended if they had acted when she first arrived, the child would have been fine.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of about 600 hooded flannel shirts imported by La Jolla Sport USA due to a strangulation hazard. According to the agency, the shirts have drawstrings around the neck that pose a strangulation risk to children and violate federal standards. There have been no injuries reported in association with the product.
