New DUI laws take effect 1 month from today (July 1, 2010)

Starting July 1st, 2010, a new Colordo-wide DUI law is going into effect that will make penalties a lot tougher for repeat offenders.

Under the new law, you could spend five days behind bars for your first DUI, and for second-time offenders, the penalty is at least a mandatory ten days, and for third-time offenders, at least a mandatory 60 days, maybe longer.

Offenders at all levels will also have to serve public service hours, and now, they’ll also have to pay for their own drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

If you skip out or don’t serve your rehabilititation program to the end, you could also serve more jail time.

The new law is not just about making the penalties tougher, but more about getting to the root of the problem.

Beyond just jail time, Colorado State Patrol says a DUI will likely cost you around $13,000, and ultimately, could cost you or someone else, a life.
